CCSA, Cosmopolitan University Strengthen Strategic Partnership with NiMet on AI-Driven Climate-Smart Innovation

The Centre for Climate-Smart Agriculture (CCSA), Cosmopolitan University Abuja, has taken a significant step toward advancing climate-smart innovation through a strategic engagement with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), focused on the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital technologies to climate resilience and sustainable development.
On Monday, 6 July 2026, the Vice-Chancellor of Cosmopolitan University, Prof. Carl Adams, led a high-level delegation to NiMet headquarters in Abuja. The delegation included the Pro-Chancellor, Prof. Ibrahim Katampe, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer of CCSA, Dr. Rislan A. Kanya, and other senior university officials. They were received by the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike.
During the engagement, Prof. Anosike underscored the shared commitment of NiMet and Cosmopolitan University to translating scientific research into practical solutions that improve livelihoods and strengthen national resilience. He highlighted NiMet’s contributions to meteorological research and climate services and commended the University and CCSA for embracing emerging technologies, particularly AI, in support of climate-ready and climate-resilient communities.
In his remarks, Prof. Carl Adams reaffirmed the University’s commitment to developing a new generation of indigenous AI scientists and innovators capable of addressing Nigeria’s climate and environmental challenges. He noted that Cosmopolitan University, through CCSA, is investing in climate-smart solutions powered by satellite data, AI, data analytics, and digital technologies to support agriculture, environmental sustainability, and national development.
The meeting concluded with a mutual agreement to formalise the partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The proposed collaboration will focus on:
- Climate-smart and digital agriculture for smallholder farmers;
- Aviation and meteorological research;
- Artificial Intelligence applications in climate and environmental systems;
- Data analytics and decision-support technologies;
- Staff exchange and capacity-building programmes; and
- The effective use of meteorological information to improve livelihoods and strengthen climate resilience.
This engagement marks the beginning of a strategic partnership that brings together the scientific expertise of NiMet and the academic and innovation strengths of Cosmopolitan University and CCSA. By integrating research, technology, and capacity development, the partnership is expected to foster groundbreaking solutions, strengthen local expertise in AI and climate science, and deliver measurable benefits to communities across Nigeria.
CCSA remains committed to advancing interdisciplinary research and innovation that supports climate-smart agriculture, environmental sustainability, and resilient livelihoods, in line with national and global development priorities.
