CCSA and WFAN Launch Farmers’ Data Digitalisation in Three States, Target One Million Wheat Farmers Nationwide

The Centre for Climate-Smart Agriculture (CCSA) and the Wheat Farmers Association of Nigeria (WFAN) have commenced the digital profiling of wheat farmers in three pilot states, following the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between both organisations in July 2025.
The ongoing exercise marks the first phase of a nationwide programme aimed at profiling one million wheat farmers across Nigeria using CCSA’s AI-powered farm information system. The initiative is designed to build a verified national database of wheat farmers to improve access to government and private sector support programmes such as finance for agricultural inputs, insurance, mechanisation, irrigation and modern extension services.
The pilot registration is currently underway in selected wheat-producing states including Jigawa, Kano and Kaduna, with plans to expand rapidly to other major wheat-producing areas such as Kebbi, Zamfara and additional states where wheat cultivation is intensive.
Officials of both organisations described the launch as a major milestone in the implementation of the July 2025 MoU, which seeks to transform Nigeria’s wheat value chain through data-driven planning, digital agriculture and climate-smart innovations. They noted that accurate farmer data would strengthen policy implementation, enhance transparency, improve productivity and boost national food security.
Under the programme, CCSA is deploying its Artificial Intelligence, GIS and smart farmer profiling systems to capture farmers’ biodata, farm locations, production capacity, crop cultivation records, and soil biological, chemical and physical characteristics, input requirements and climate risk exposure in real time. The digital platform will also support monitoring, evaluation and impact measurement for wheat development programmes nationwide.
The initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s drive to attain wheat self-sufficiency, reduce import dependence and strengthen Nigeria’s agricultural data infrastructure, while improving the livelihoods of smallholder wheat farmers. During his visit to CCSA, the WFAN President, Alhaji Musa Shehu Sheka and other members of the executive leadership expressed optimism about the ongoing farmers’ data digitalisation exercise and agreed to organise national capacity development for WFAN members in January 2026.
